Alan Scot Thornton, age 65 of Elkhart, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 12, 2022.  Al was born April 2, 1957, in Elkhart, Indiana to the late Everett and Gertrude (Troyer) Thornton.  He was a graduate of Brethren Christian High School and later obtained his Associate Degree from Liberty University. On December 20, 1980, Al married Cindy Ryver in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania.  They recently celebrated their 41st anniversary.

Al is survived by his wife Cindy Thornton of Elkhart and their children Jessica (Adam) Cotti of Annapolis, Maryland, Tyler (Mackenzie) Thornton of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Preston Thornton and Mackenzie Thornton, both of Osceola, Indiana, and his foster daughter Alicia (John) Pemberton of South Bend. Surviving as well are 6 grandchildren: Levi, Natalie, Cole, Theo, Quinn and Graham.  Al is also survived by his siblings Jim (Jackie) Thornton of Richmond, Virginia, Ruth (David) Bessey of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Caroline Hansen of Oceanside, California.

A celebration of Al’s life will be held at First Baptist Church in Elkhart on May 14, 2022 with a two hour visitation from 9-11 am followed by a celebration of life at 11:15. Immediately after the service, join us for some of Al’s favorite things.  Cruz Family Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Osceola has been entrusted with his care.

Alan was the owner of Gem Cleaning Services Incorporated for over 20 years where he served his clientele with integrity and honesty. In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time outdoors hiking, working in his garden and beekeeping.  He also loved being an active part of his children and grandchildren’s lives and supported them in all of their endeavors.

Most of all, Alan loved the Lord and served faithfully as the facilities manager at First Baptist Church of Elkhart.  As a longtime member, Al served in various capacities at the church whenever called upon.  He volunteered his time as a 5th and 6th grade Kids Club leader, life group leader, and an elder.  He also showed his love for Christ in the Elkhart County jail where he served on the Chaplain’s board and shared the word of God and His plan of salvation with those in need.  Many hours were spent in service to others and in prayer for those he had met.
