David R. Forbes

David Riggs Forbes, 84, passed away Monday morning, Sept. 15, 2025, at Tanglewood Trace Senior Living Center in Mishawaka, IN.

David was born on Jan. 12, 1941, in Ferndale, MI, to Cecil and Mabel Forbes. He was the youngest of his two siblings: Jack — or “John” — and Mary Alice.

On April 4, 1964, he married Doreen Forbes, with whom he happily spent the rest of his life. They raised their family in Redford, MI, and in retirement moved to Grosse Ile, MI.

Shortly after David married, he began working on the Pennsylvania Railroad as a hitchman. He later worked as a security guard and eventually became an electrician at Ford Motor Company, where he spent the majority of his career.

David was a storyteller. He regaled friends and family — especially his grandchildren — with tales from his childhood, work, fatherhood, and the dogs he had throughout his life — he always loved dogs.

To those who knew him best, David was a man strong in his convictions, fiercely independent and deeply devoted to his family and friends.

He and his wife shared a strong Christian faith and will meet again in the Kingdom of Heaven.

David is survived by his wife, Doreen Forbes; his two children, Rebecca and Christopher; his daughter-in-law, Carrie; his four grandchildren, Zachary, John, Kelsey, and Emily; and his small white dog, Cody.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Pet Refuge at Donate Pet Refuge or the Humane Society of St. Joseph County at Donate SJC Humane Society.
