Listen to Obituary

With heavy hearts and loving memories, we announce the passing of Dennis James Heinrich, who went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday evening, November 3, 2026. Dennis passed away at the People of Praise Community Center, surrounded by men he loved and deeply respected, as they gathered together for their men’s prayer fellowship. For a man whose life was so deeply rooted in faith and community, there is comfort in knowing that his final moments were spent among his brothers in Christ, in a place that meant so much to him.

To know Dennis was to know a man whose faith was unwavering, whose laughter was contagious, and whose heart was full of love for the people and community around him. He approached life with a childlike sense of wonder, finding happiness in the simplest things and sharing that joy freely with everyone he met.

Faith was the foundation of Dennis’s life. He was deeply devoted to God and found great purpose in serving others. As a member of the People of Praise community, Dennis faithfully served through his work in general maintenance, taking pride in caring for the places and people that meant so much to him. He also worked in food service at multiple schools throughout the South Bend School District, where his friendly nature and cheerful spirit touched those he encountered.

Dennis was an active and devoted member of his church communities at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. He served faithfully as the primary acolyte, loved singing in the choir, and was especially known for his beautiful cantoring of scripture, sharing his faith through song and the spoken Word. He also dedicated his time to volunteering and was a devoted member of the men’s fellowship within the People of Praise community. Through their gatherings, shared prayers, and brotherhood, Dennis found friendship, encouragement, and a deep sense of belonging among men who shared his love for God.

Dennis was a loyal and steadfast friend, the kind of person who could always be counted on to show up. Whether supporting his nieces and nephews at their events, babysitting over summers, lending a helping hand, or simply sharing a laugh, he made people feel loved through his presence. He was especially known for his handmade cards, each one thoughtfully created and filled with heartfelt messages that had a way of making the recipient feel truly special. His words were sincere, personal, and often deeply meaningful, leaving behind little keepsakes of his love that family and friends will treasure for years to come. He had a playful sense of humor, a fondness for a good dad joke, and a knack for making people smile. Those closest to him knew that a warm greeting might come with one of his signature bear hugs, a mischievous grin, or a joke that was just corny enough to make everyone laugh. His bright smile and unmistakable belly laugh could light up any room, and his cheerful spirit was a gift to everyone fortunate enough to know him.

He found delight in movies, trains, cheering on the South Bend Cubs, and rooting for his beloved Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He also had a particular fondness for spontaneous drives. Never one to let a little distance get in the way of an adventure, he might hop in the car with no particular destination in mind—once finding himself all the way in Ohio! Those little adventures were simply part of his charm and the joyful curiosity with which he experienced the world.

Above all, Dennis lived a life of genuine kindness, loyalty, and faith. He never needed grand gestures to show his love. He showed it by being there, by remembering what mattered to others, by sharing his laughter, and by finding joy in the everyday moments that so many of us overlook. His was a life of simple pleasures, meaningful connections, and a steadfast belief in the goodness of God.

He leaves behind his loving mother, Kathleen; his sisters, Wendy and Brooke; his nieces, Anni, Catherine, and Braylen; and his nephews, Brendan and Andrew, along with cherished friends, fellow church members, and a community whose lives were made brighter by his presence.

While his passing leaves an immeasurable emptiness in the hearts of those who loved him, his family takes comfort in knowing that his faith carried him throughout his life and that he now rests in the loving arms of the Lord.

His laughter will be missed, his hugs remembered, his songs cherished, and his joyful spirit carried forward by all who knew him.
