George Michael Vargo, age 83 of Granger, passed away Thursday, April 16, 2026, at Creekside Village Rehabilitation Center. He was born September 22, 1942, in Mishawaka, Indiana to the late Michael and Mary (Sulok) Vargo and graduated from St. Joseph High School. After graduation, George enlisted in the U.S. Army and served honorably in the Army Reserves for six years. While working at Associates Investment Company, he met Veronica Kochanowski, and they were married on January 9, 1965, in Walkerton, Indiana. They shared 61 years of marriage.

Veronica survives, along with their children, Vince (Karla) Vargo of Edwardsburg, Michigan and Tony (Kimberly) Vargo of Mishawaka. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Mackenzie Vargo, Kira Vargo, Brody Vargo, and Brayden Vargo, and his aunt, Rose Zmyslo.

George worked as a systems analyst at Associates Investment Company for more than 37 years, retiring in 1998 at the age of 55. He remained active in the community, serving on the executive boards of the Indiana Wildlife Federation and the Data Processing Management Association, and was a founding member of Harris Township Little League, where he coached his sons for many years.

He enjoyed following sports, especially the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He held season tickets to the Notre Dame women’s basketball team and kept up with the Chicago White Sox. He also spent time at local high school sporting events and later supported his grandchildren by attending their games. George enjoyed fishing trips with family and also liked to bowl. He had a dry sense of humor and was known for his quick one-liners, often keeping those around him laughing.

His faith and family were central in his life. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who stayed close with his extended family, especially his cousins. He served as an altar boy at St. Joseph Farm and remained active in his faith at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Granger.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the 1:00pm Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Granger with interment to follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. We invite those unable to attend in person to join us for a livestream of the funeral service, so everyone can honor and remember George together by viewing his service in real time in the window below.
