Mary E. Sanders, 82, of Elkhart peacefully passed on Saturday, March 28, 2026, with family by her side. She was born in Anderson, IN on September 14, 1943, to the late Herbert Cowles and Emma (Musick) Richardson and later married Richard Sanders, Sr.
Richard survives along with their children, Richard, Jr. and Judy (Robert) Windmiller, all of Elkhart. Two grandchildren, Jaylynn Sanders, and Justin Windmiller, and great-grandchildren, Mason Lonsbury and Benjamin Windmiller, also survive. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother Kenneth Cowles, and sister, Patty Young.
Mary was a devoted stay-at-home mother who found great joy in the comfort of home and the simple rhythms of daily life. A true homebody, she cherished quiet moments spent reading a good book or working on her latest crochet project. Mary also enjoyed cheering on Notre Dame Fighting Irish football and had a deep love for her family and beloved pets, who brought her deep happiness.
A private family graveside is scheduled for Thursday, April 2, 2026, at Olive Cemetery, Elkhart. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Elkhart County Humane Society or American Cancer Society.
