Stephen Andrew Vascil, age 81, passed away at his home in Granger with his family by his side on the morning of December 20, 2025. Steve was born December 3, 1944, in South Bend, Indiana to the late Eugene and Rose (Bardo) Vascil. He was a graduate of Penn High School, and later enlisted in the United States Army National Guard where he served honorably during the Vietnam War era. On November 12, 1966, he married Michelle Chwalek at St. Steven’s Church in South Bend. They recently celebrated 59 years of love, laughter, and marriage.
Steve is survived by his wife Michelle of Granger and their children, Christine (Chad) Beachy of Mishawaka and Steve (Jennifer) Vascil of Granger, along with their grandsons, Colin Vascil and Chase Beachy. Steve was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Monica Potasnik and Frances Zielinski.
A private graveside service will be held at a later time. Cruz Family Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Osceola has been entrusted with his care.
Steve was employed for more than 30 years as a master diesel mechanic with Shipper’s Dispatch and later retired from Preston Trucking, where he was a longtime member of the Teamsters Union. He also shared his years of mechanical knowledge by teaching trade skills to many students through Ivy Tech programs. In his spare time, Steve enjoyed building custom engines for power boats and hot rod cars.
Steve was a member of American Legion Post 365 and VFW Post 2284 in Edwardsburg, Michigan. He enjoyed participating in bass fishing tournaments with the Michiana Bassmasters and competing in shooting sports. Steve also loved taking his 1982 Corvette for a drive and had a deep love for animals, especially his faithful Rottweiler, Sadie Ann.
