Thelma L. “LaVern” Dias, the “Betty White” of Osceola, entered eternal rest on Monday, June 23, 2025, after celebrating her 100th birthday. She was born in Dubois County, Indiana on May 20, 1925, to the late Eldo and Lois Conrad. She married Dennis Jones in 1942, and after his death, married the love of her life, Stan Dias in 1960, who also preceded her in death in 2002.
Surviving are her daughters, Anita (Rick Kraus) Jones of South Bend and Sandra Hager of Mitchell, IN; 8 grandchildren, Terri Fode, Toni (Jeff) Hall, Frank (Amy) Irvin, Jessica Logan, Andrea Milewski, Doug (Paula Marshall) Jones, Jr. and Stephanie Egierski also survive along with 22 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her 4 younger siblings, a son, Doug Jones, grandson, James Logan, and great-grandson Jorden Wigfall.
Thelma was a beloved fixture in the Osceola community, best known as the long-time manager of OC Liquor and affectionately referred to as the “Betty White of Osceola.” With her quick wit and kind heart, she brought laughter and warmth wherever she went. A devoted member of Osceola United Methodist Church, Thelma served faithfully as a greeter and prayer warrior. Her ministry extended beyond the church walls, as she lovingly handmade over 100 baby blankets, each one prayed over before being gifted to a newborn and created countless lap blankets to bring comfort to nursing home residents. Thelma also had a deep love for simple joys when playing cards with friends, tackling word search puzzles, and indulging in anything chocolate.
A time to celebrate a wonderful life is scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025, at Osceola UMC with a time to visit from 11:30 – 1pm and a service at 1pm. In accordance with the families’ wishes, cremation has taken place with her final rest next to Stan.
