Dr. John Moss D.D.S. Obituary

John Moss passed away peacefully at BellTower Rehabilitation Facility, Granger on Tuesday October 9, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. John was born in DeKalb IL to John T Moss and Cherrie Johnston Moss on September 25th 1933.

He grew up in DeKalb where his love for competitive swimming began and continued through his high school and college years at Virginia Military Institute. The summer he graduated from VMI he married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Diehl on August 18, 1956.  In September, Phyllis, a kindergarten teacher, supported John as he pursued his D.D.S. degree at Loyola Dental School in Chicago.  Immediately following his Loyola graduation, he was summoned to serve his country at Fort Ord, California Army base from 1960 to 1962.  He loved to recall how he frequently played golf at nearby Pebble Beach for five dollars a round.  Capt. John Moss was honorably discharged in 1962.

He bought a dental practice in Wheaton, Il. where John and Phyllis joined Wheaton drama club.  They both enjoyed acting as well as all the behind the scene jobs.  In 1969 he returned to Loyola Dental School to specialize in Orthodontics and 1971 he opened an office in South Bend, Indiana where he became a member of the American Association of Orthodontics.

In 1973, he joined Morris Park Country Club and continued playing golf until he was 80. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Bears and Notre Dame Football and lived long enough to see his beloved Cubs win the World Series.

John is survived by his wife Phyllis and their four children: Kathryn Kay of Tennessee, Bryn (Ashford) Bodden of Mishawaka, John Jr (Patty) of Granger, and Kevin of South Bend. Also surviving are their grandchildren; Valarie (Matt) Sukolics, Matt Rearick, Rance (Bailee) McCurry, Elizabeth McCurry, Jeremiah McCurry, David, Joanie, Leilany and Stacy Bodden, Michael, Jenna and Tyler Moss, and Annaliese Moss. Surviving as well are four great-grandchildren; twins Lucas and Liam Sukolics, Nolan Rearick, and Braxton McCurry.  John was preceded in death by his sister, Lynn Perry, and his grandsons Aaron and Christopher Bodden.

We want to extend special thank you to our “other daughter” Debbie Cruz Szabo and Bill and Phyllis Hamel for their thoughtful concern during this sad and lingering time.
