Gregory Canfield Obituary

Gregory John Canfield, age 68 of South Bend, passed away early in the morning on Friday, October 29th, 2021, at the Center for Hospice Care, Raclin House, in Mishawaka, IN. Gregory was born on August 2nd, 1953, in Mishawaka, IN to Clement and Virginia (Huba) Canfield, both of whom preceded him in death.

Gregory married Vera Craven in Mishawaka, Indiana on August 26, 1977.  She preceded him in death. Gregory is survived by his son, Jason Canfield of South Bend, Indiana, his daughter Mercedes Canfield of South Bend, Indiana; grandchildren, Austin Canfield and Alissa Canfield; and sisters, Marilyn (Jim) Skaalerud of Lebanon, Tennessee, Janet Grauel of South Bend, Indiana; and brothers, Tom (Deborah) Canfield of Elkhart, Indiana, Mike (Celine) Canfield of San Antonio, Texas, and Jim (Irma) Canfield of San Antonio, Texas. Gregory was preceded in death by his sisters Patricia Welling (Canfield), Dolores Canfield, and his brother Martin Canfield.

A private memorial service will be held for Greg at a later date.  Cruz Family Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Osceola is assisting with the arrangements.

Gregory, known more closely as Greg, was a dedicated father, grandfather, sibling and friend. He was known for his strong sense of self, for being steadfast in moments of weakness, he loved music, and outdoors is where he felt the most relaxed and connected to the world. After Greg had his stroke in 1992 he faced the toughest change in life he would ever have to challenge and overcome. His strength, his perseverance, his trust in God, his belief that he was truly doing "better than most" on some days are what made his life as blessed and substantial as it was.

Greg touched so many lives, over so many years, it's impossible to say just what made him, him. If it was warm and sunny out, you'd find him laid back and relaxed in the sun at the Fish Ladder in Downtown South Bend or sitting listening to the tunes flow at Fridays at the Fountain. He always had an entrepreneurial spirit, and if he set his mind to do something, he was going to do just that.
