Malvern Smith Obituary

Malvern Charles Smith, age 91 of South Bend, passed away with his loving daughter by his side on Friday, December 31, 2021.  Malvern was born August 23, 1930, in South Bend, Indiana to the late Mexico and Edith (Pruett) Smith. Malvern served honorably from 1951 to 1954 in the US Marine Corps where he was stationed in Korea for over a year.

He is survived by his son Don Smith of Niles, Michigan, his daughters Sandy (Andrew) Dlugosz of South Bend, and Debbie Smith, and a stepdaughter Cathy Podell-Jones of Buchanan, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his daughter Gayle Ann Smith, his brother Dwight Smith, and a stepson Ken Tooley.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger, Indiana, at a later date.  Cruz Family Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting with arrangements.

Malvern retired after many years as a Journeyman Millwright from the Uniroyal Corporation in Mishawaka where he maintained and repaired equipment and machinery to keep the plant operations functioning at their optimal levels. . Malvern was “always on the go” tinkering with cars, attending auctions and he enjoyed spending time in his gardens, growing strawberries, tomatoes, and corn.

His son Don shared the following sentiment: "Like many of his friends at the local auction barn who have passed before him, Malvern too, lost his final bid to the elderly, bearded gentleman wearing the white robe and holding an hourglass."

Memorials may be given to Logan Industries 3621 Boland Dr. South Bend, IN 46628.  To light a virtual candle, share a story of Malvern’s life, or leave a message of comfort for the Smith family, please follow the links provided on the tribute wall tab above.
