Peggy Basse Obituary

Peggy Louise Basse, age 87, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Elkhart on Friday, April 22, 2022.  Peggy was born January 15, 1935, in LaGrange County, Indiana to the late Vanus and Edythe (Woodworth) Miller.  May 30, 1952, she married her high school sweetheart, Ferman H. Basse.  Ferman preceded her in death on February 22, 2004.

Peggy was the Matriarch of the family and dedicated herself to her family as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  Her selflessness, ability to see the good in people and her warm and empathetic nature shined brightly.   Peggy had a heart of gold and loved her family immensely. Her biggest delight was buying and giving to others.  Her happiest time of year was the Christmas holiday when she was able to see many of her loved ones.  She was an excellent seamstress and while her children were growing up, she often stayed up all night sewing new dresses for her daughters.

Peggy is survived by her children: Steven Basse, Elkhart, Jolinda (Paul) Wood of Elkhart,  Julie Hoss of Osceola, Debra (Andrew) Bledsoe of Elkhart and Peggy (Dallas) Robbins of Elkhart, as well as her grandchildren: Daniel Wood of Elkhart, Debbie (Matt) Kratzer of Osceola, Matthew Wood of Elkhart, Nicholas (Bobbi) Basse of Mishawaka, Alex (Sarah Shaw) Basse of Elkhart, Michael (Mary) Hoss of Goshen, Amy Mathews of Mishawaka, Mindy Rice of Elkhart, Nicole (Mike Wilson) Shively of Bristol, Kevin (Cori) Shively of Jones Michigan, Tamera (Larry Wheatbrook) Anderson of Elkhart and Tyler Robbins of Elkhart.  Surviving as well are her great-grandchildren: Kelsey (Miguel) Wood, Preston, Ashley and Britnee Kratzer, Haley and Parker Wood, Mackenzie O'Bryant, Lukas, Logan and Kambrie Medford, Austin, Avery and Ethan Wilson, Colton and Carter Shively, Kendralyn Carlisle, Larry Wheatbrook, Jr., Gavin (Ashley) Anderson, Raven Anderson, Wendi Basse and Tristan, Lincoln and Caspian Basse, and her great-great grandchildren: Sophia, Mason, Graciella and Jaxson Perez and Grayson Anderson.  Peggy is also survived by her siblings: Shirley Rumfelt and Ruth Ann (Tom) Shirley and Richard (Pam) Miller, her sisters-in-law Jocelyn Basse and Joyce Miller, special nieces: Cindy (William Van Kaes Harrison) Basse and Terri Miller and a host of other beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Vanus and Edythe Miller, her husband: Ferman Basse, her son: Terry Basse, her grandsons: Randy Wood and Andrew Basse, her brothers: Larry and Dave Miller, her brothers-in-law: Marvin Basse and Gene Rumfelt and her lifelong best friend, Lois Losee.
